Thompson and anyone who has already learned calculus can make sense of it in hindsight, but how can it be viewed as anything but nonsense by a first-time reader? Some of the other books listed in comments are far better imo. What's a beginning student supposed to make of this? But wait, we can make that flea $dx$ as small as we wish, and a flea as small as we wish certainly wouldn't bother an ox. As a real world example, we're told to think of $dx$ as a flea on an ox (which would bother the ox) and $(dx)^2$ as a flea on the flea (which wouldn't bother the ox). It leads to wonderful chains of reasoning such as $y+dy=x^2+2x\cdot dx+(dx)^2$ but let's drop the small term (no, not that one.the really small one dummy) and actually $y+dy=x^2+2x\cdot dx$. I'm not being unfair either, this is the actual essence of his argument. I looked at the second edition (not the Gardner update), but unless Gardner practically rewrote the book I don't think this matters much.Īt the very beginning, derivatives are explained by simply stating that $dx$ is small and so $(dx)^2$ and higher powers are, like, really really small and they don't matter so we ignore them. You may also be interested in my own textbook Fundamentals of Calculus, which introduces both infinitesimals and limits while focusing mainly on techniques and applications rather than foundational issues.Īfter giving the book another look I have to expand on my comment above and make it stronger: no, this isn't a good book for a first-time learner, and in fact I think it's a terrible choice. Compared to Thompson, it's boring and pedantic and slow and lacking in personality, but it's worth having on hand while working through Thompson. There is a text by Keisler that is free online and introduces freshman calculus using infinitesimals, but with a bit more of the modern machinery. When teaching yourself something intellectually challenging, I would always suggest that you find multiple sources of information rather than just focusing on one book. Historically, there were some concerns that infinitesimals were inherently inconsistent, but it turns out that that's not the case. Both infinitesimals and limits are perfectly fine ways of introducing calculus. It uses infinitesimals rather than limits. IIRC Gardner moderates some of the dated and sexist language.īe aware of how this book's approach relates to the history and to currently fashionable ways of presenting calculus. It cuts out a ton of the ridiculous cruft that has clogged up the current crop of commercial freshman calculus texts.

I drive between 70-75 most of the hwy trip and the majority of the city driving is 35+ but there tends to be a lot of red lights. That is actually calculated not using the onboard computer. I've had my 2008 XE with the 3.5 a little over a month and with some very mixed driving (probably slightly slanted towards highway) and 1100 miles I'm averaging 23.8 MPG. You may want to try using the "Search this Thread" function to find some of the contributions by other members, some of whom have quite a bit of knowledge about the AURA and engines, in general. There have been several other threads about gas mileage. IMHO, your mileage won't improve significantly, if at all, if your XR isn't used on longer distances and increased speed to take better advantage of your XR's potential. This person's mileage did improve after several months. The former travels a significantly longer distance but usually in heavy rush hour traffic and initially reported horrible mileage compared to their previous L series Saturn. The latter told me they DEFINITELY noticed the poor mileage they were getting on their 3.5 mile trip to work. Two people at my place of work also own AURA's - one puchased a used 09 XE and one recently purchased a used 07 XR. In 2 1/2 years I have not achieved better than 19 mpg (that may change with my next fill-up as I just completed a 180 mile mini-roadtrip yesterday at an average speed of 65-70 mph). I maintain a hard copy as well as an online gas log which you can see here. I just don't travel enough of a distance in one stretch at a speed conducive to achieving better gas mileage. That's because I have a V6 and rarely go over 40 mph when driving to work and I usually get stuck at 3 of the 4 stop lights between home and work. My average daily commute consists of 4 trips totaling 9.2 miles and I get TERRIBLE gas mileage. I work 2.4 miles from my house and usually go home for lunch and then back to work. Which model AURA do you have? XE or XR? It would also help if you could provide us with a specific number of miles traveled between fill-ups, how many gallons your AURA took and when the last fill-up was prior to the most current one. Make sure you run through each scenario using each role. With all the states, transitions, transition ordering, roles, and permissions, there are plenty of opportunities for misconfiguration even for a total pro with great attention to detail like yourself. You can add the patch to your composer.json file if you're tired of your workflow states getting accidentally changed. Well, that's a bug as of 8.5.3 that will be fixed in the next 8.5 bugfix release. Minimize Accidental Transitionsīut why wouldn't my content's workflow state stay the same by default when editing the content (assuming the user has access to a transition that keeps it the same)? I have to set an order correctly to keep a default value from being lost? You may have to add additional transitions to make this all make sense.Īs for the ordering of workflow states themselves, this will only affect ordering when states are listed, for example in a Views exposed filter of workflow states or within the workflows administration. To set the right order, you have to map each state to what should be its default value when editing. If an editor misses setting this option correctly, they will simply get the first transition, so make sure that first transition is a good default. Ordering of the transitions here is very important because the state options on the content editing form will appear as a select list of states ordered by the transition order, and it will default to the first available one. Therefore, make sure that draft content can stay as draft when edited, etc. In fact, it would be very easy to accidentally publish what you had archived, because editing the content will set it back to published as the default setting. You'd have to change the status to published and then back to archived. In the above (default core) example, it is not possible to edit archived content and maintain the same state of archived. The transitions represent which options will be available for the state when you edit content. Make sure the transitions include non-transitions. If they can change the state from "Needs Work" to "Needs Review," make sure they can change it back to "Needs Work." You must allow Non-Transitions If you can't think of a clear, descriptive verb that applies, you can go with 'Set state to %your_state" or "Mark as %your_state." Don't sweat the names of transitions too much though they don't seem to ever appear in an editor-facing way anyway.ĭon't forget to allow editors to undo transitions. The transitions should be named as verbs. You might want some paper to map out all the paths between workflow states that content might go through. Transitions between workflow states must be thought through Typically, you'll want to lock down who can publish content, allowing content contributors to create new drafts only. Transitions between workflow states will be what you assign as permissions to roles. It makes a much simpler mental model for everyone. Try to use the same workflow on all content types if you can. A good compromise is to ask that the team tries something simple first and adds complexity down the line if needed. If you create an editorial workflow that is too strict and complex, editors will tend to find ways to work around the system. Stakeholders may ask for many roles and many workflow states without knowing the increased complexity and likelihood of editorial confusion that results. Resist increases in roles, workflows, and workflow states and make sure they are justified by a business need. I've been doing some work with this for a new site for a large organization, and have some tips and tricks. The documentation gives a good overview.Ĭontent Moderation requires the Workflows core module, allowing you to set up custom editorial workflows. Think of it like the contributed module Workbench Moderation in Drupal 7, but without all the Workbench editor Views that never seemed to completely make sense. The Content Moderation core module was marked stable in Drupal 8.5. |
